(1) Notebook page on constitution (wk 21, day 3)
A good illustration to help with creating the notebook page on the 3 branches of government is in one of the book basket books: Shh! We're Writing the Constitution. Ours is illustrated by Tomie dePaula and has a fun tree illustration to help visualize how the notebook page might look. (Trivia: according to his website, it's da-POW-la)

Shh! is similar to the style of George Washington's World, with interesting details about the events (including a few new ones), plus the fun illustrations.

(2) Book basket on constitution
Another good book basket book for my 7th grader was the History of US one that shows the full constitution. (It's also printed in Shh! We're Writing...) Or, I'm sure you can find the text online in lots of places. It really isn't a very long document, we decided, and I made a simple outline so ds could absorb as much as possible (not to mention me!):

Preamble - One sentence
Article I – Legislative power
Article II – Executive power
Article III – Judicial power
Article IV – The States
Article V – About amendments
Article VI – The Constitution is supreme
Article VII – Ratified by 9 states in 1787

(3) Extra - Preamble copywork
I really like the things already included in EX1850 about the Constitution. But I also decided to have ds (7th grade) write out the preamble as copywork. It was easy to copy-paste from online sources for him to copy.

(4) Interesting info - framers of the constitution

If you want to expand on the theme of developing our new government, especially this big election year, here are some thoughtful but not-too-awfully-time-consuming pages:

C-SPAN also has a unit on choosing a cabinet, if you want to relate it o the present day. I have used lots of C-SPAN stuff but didn't use this one myself.

(7) Notebook on French Revolution
I didn't notice at first that even though the French Revolution is a topic in week 22, the notebook page is assigned in week 23. So ds took notes to help remember the following week, when he'll have a more complete story under his belt.

(8) Hymn
If you have a son doing EX1850, he may enjoy hearing a male voice on occasion :o) The hymn this week was especially nice when we listened to it performed by...

(a) Bill Batstone, as part of the CD My Savior's Love by the Tommy Coomes Band

(b) Mark Schultz, from the CD Broken & Beautiful, which we listened to at CBD as a preview of a download.

Be sure to use the matching printed lyrics because they vary a lot with this song.

Agreeing with Julie on "Shhhhh, we're writing the Constitution", also Enchanted Learning has some great worksheets on the constitution and the Bill of Rights if you want to go into more detail.

We also memorized the pre-amble of the Constitution using School House Rocks. I can hear the song in my head right now... "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union...."

for make a quilt pattern activity, we printed a sheet of graph paper from donna young's site for a 7 x 7 grid
then designed a pattern to fit the"grid" and made that. My daughter really enjoyed this activity over several days. nice creative work and independent and fun - even for a jr. high kiddo.

and we're enjoying some of the online games that Julie linked above for bill of rights.

also a good time to review those "school house rock" songs "I'm Just a Bill" and "3 ring circus", and of course... The Preamble Song.
