Math drill

Unread post by graceandjarrod » Sun Nov 19, 2017 7:07 pm

Hi, my son is in Singapore 2A on day 55. Right now we just do addition and subtraction math facts. I am wondering when should he start multiplication facts practice?
Thanks,
Grace

MFW recommends that you drill only those concepts that have been fully taught and practiced if using Singapore. Specifically, "introduce x1, x2, and x3 after finishing 2A, x4 after finishing page 25 of 2B, and the rest of the cards after page 90 of 3A." This information is written on the math flashcards sets.

Ok. Thank you! I didn't see that info.

Can we use any horizontal flashcards? Is there a reason they are horizontal?

They're horizontal because it encourages using mental math and many different ways to solve the same problem. When they're vertical, we tend to try to use carrying and borrowing.

I'm sure you probably could use any horizontal math flashcarrds. The benefit to using MFW flash cards is that they print a cards of tips and guidelines in each stack.

We are just starting Singapore at 2a. Was this mental math taught in 1a/1b?

It is really just beginning. Really picks up in 2B. Don't worry if you haven't noticed it yet. The instructions on the MFW flash cards also recommend at what level you should be doing the cards, and in what order.
