I found several videos of old telegraphs in action on YouTube. I think it helped ds better understand the difference between a telephone and a telegraph.

We placed our "dime-sized" glue blobs ( ) on foil yesterday, so we'd be ready to color them and place on our crown today. Well, they are certainly dry, but they are NOT jewels. They are flat glue pancakes that are hard to peel off the foil. And when I say pancake, I mean pancake (Norweigen-Style - flat, flat, flat! No high and lofty buttermilk's here! )

We used Elmer's School Glue.
We dried them in two different rooms, so I don't think temperature was a factor.
Four different people tried to form them, but they all came out the same.
I'm a completer and like the challenge of getting something to work as written. I don't know if that is good or bad .
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!

We did the jewels and they turned out the same as you described.

The second time we did it I made the crown out of yellow construction paper and had dd color some jewels on it. I know I have seen "jewels" in the craft department at Walmart that would have worked nicely on the crown. But I didn't have any and didn't look ahead to buy some so we went with what we had.

Hi...we just did this last week. Ours were very flat too, but the kids "painted" them with markers and they were beautiful. It was a bit messy (marker ink all over their fingers), and they did have to pry the jewels off, but they managed. A couple did tear and they felt bad, but we'd made so many blobs of glue that I was able to convince them it was o.k.. They loved the project and saved their extras to make crowns for their favorite stuffed animals instead of themselves.

In the past we've used my daughter's stick-on earrings as jewels. Sometimes they can be found at a dollar store; Wal-Mart carries them too. ...but the homemade jewels are cheaper--if you can get it to work. ..or maybe try to make them again on a different surface like a plastic ruler or something like that and they may be dry in a few hours and can just be "popped" off?????

I wonder if mixing a little cornstarch into the glue or something like that would "thicken" it up? There is a white craft glue called Modge Podge that you can get at Walmart that works really well for glue crafts. (It's at Michaels, too.) It is in a bottle with a screw on lid. I use this for any "glue painting projects." It might work - I haven't tried, though.

I have no idea on the ADV project. if no one here has the "magical help/hint", call the MFW office and ask them. They might have someone in the office who might be able to help, or have had a pilot family send extra notes or something.

I know I looked at the K instructions and thought, how am I going to paint or color glue? Why not just use globs of glitter glue instead , or print and glue? You have me curious though. Sounds like Rachel and her crew did a good job with markers.

Is there any chance you could print some jewels? Here is what I'm using in the Jewel Kindy unit? Saw it on this thread

It sounds like to me this is the way they are supposed to look from Rachel's experience above. She said hers turned out well once they colored them. I never did this craft since my kids were older when Adventure's came out, so hopefully you will get other responses too.

My thought is they are not supposed to be big and tall and wouldn't printable ones be even flatter than the glue ones? These are only my thoughts, but now I am interested and maybe I will go home tonight and just try this out .

Hope others will help you out with their real experience with this project.

All the advice has been great!
Julie, the thread was a big help.
When I taught "traditional" school we never used school glue, just plain old Elmers Glue.
The School Glue musn't have the right consistency for what I was visualizing the jewels to look like.
We salvaged some of our flat jewels and the children colored them with markers.
We'll be putting the crown together tomorrow.

We did this last year, and my girls enjoyed it. They were slightly raised and I have no idea what glue we used, but they looked neat when colored with marker.

Will someone please remind me how jewels and crowns fit in with Adventures?! I'm having one of those moments where I feel like I've lost my mind

OK...no one laugh.
We are trying the jewels, AGAIN.
The jewels I saved from yesterday we're "not acceptable" to the children.
We had put the foil in the garbage before I decided to salvage them.
The children were sure that the King of kings and Lord of lords should NOT have jewels on His crown from the garbage!
Not wanting to mess with that theology they happily tried making new jewels this morning. Some we did with glitter glue, some with school glue.
The crown will have to wait for Monday, but Jesus' little ones will be pleased to offer it to their King of kings!

Hi there! I laughed about the jewels discussion last week! We also made crowns, but I had plastic "jewels" left over from some lesson in 1st gr. when we also made a crown, so my dd wanted to use those. I suggested our dot-to-dot markers (like bingo markers) and they made nice, round dots for "jewels" that almost look metallic because they are shiny, too. I didn't try to brave the glue experiment like you! I hope the 2nd time turned out better for all.

You know what? We ended up making one test jewel with glue last week.

Just like one of the Rachels said:
use a marker to color the dried glue glob. It gives the effect.

Our glue dried on a wrinkled piece of foil Had some chocolate candy wrappers around here. neat effect. (Dove chocolate. but that's not the point.) We peeled off the glue before coloring it. I just used regular marker, rose art (cheap stuff) marker, not washable.

So, no, it's not supposed to be a big raised thing. The glue will probably dry to a clear color instead of white and then the marker adds a shimmer of color.

The Crown is done!
We did two things: First we colored our traditional glue jewels with markers (we had tried drying the glue on wax paper on our second go-around instead of foil, but the wax paper curled up and the jewels would have been too hard to glue on the crown - we went back to foil for the third go-around!) Then we dried some glitter glue jewels. They flatten out also, but still look nice. They add a shimmery look to it.
Most projects do NOT take this long. We just picked this one to be super determined on.
I'm sure Jesus is pleased with their hearts in wanting to only give Him their best and their effort with staying with it!

Once we finished the crown it looked so nice that we left it on our table for weeks!
If you play with the foil you can usually get the glue to peel off, but one of my kids just glued it on with the foil stuck to the back. It didn't make any difference! They also colored the jewels AFTER they peeled them. That helped keep hands cleaner!
The finished product is worth the mess!

Hmmm... We gave up and the boys just colored different colored dots on their crown.

After reading from the thread [above], we also peeled off the glue dots, then glued them to the crown, then colored them. My older boys did a good job not getting marker on the paper when they colored the jewels. My 3 year old (who has to help with all crafts!) did get some marker off of the jewel and on the paper.
I'm so thankful for this forum!

Thanks for all the input. We just glued them on with the foil still hanging onto the back. Dd even made one for herself and her little brother. We got to talk about James 1:12 and added it to our list of memory verses for the next couple of weeks. Dd greatly enjoyed the craft, even if it didn't turn out the way I expected. Next time maybe non-washable markers would stay on better and not end up all over little fingers once it dries?

I was unable to find a coloring page for the California Gold Rush to use in our notebooks but I did find a cute book to make at http://www.teachervision.com. It has instructions, templates, text to put into the book and some coloring too We enjoyed doing it and it was a nice change from just doing a notebook page. Thought someone else may enjoy it too.

Week 25:Corn Casserole
The recipe in the TM was easy to make and enjoyed by all.
It didn't take long to prepare and was very child friendly as far as the children helping!

Week 25:Water Molecules
We used colored Marshmallow to complete this activity.
The children made an extra "glass of water" for Dad
They were very excited to greet him at the door and ask him if he'd like a glass of water.
This activity made GREAT conversation at the supper table and Dad enjoyed eating his water for dessert!

After reading about Samuel Morse, I researched DIY telegraphs. We made this a project with Dad one night. But we made one that works! I wish I could post a video so you could hear it, but this will have to do.
