books we enjoyed + craft
We read "The Emperor's Egg" by Martin Jenkins -- fit in well with the bible lesson.
"Penguins - A First Discovery Book" by Rene Mettler is a nice simple book that shows several kinds of penguins
We also enjoyed the craft found here: http://thebestkidsbooksite.com/craftdet ... raftID=843
The website above has other info and links for penguins, but I did not check all of them out.

Penguin non-fiction story online
Here is a good non-fiction online penguin story that a beginning reader can read, or it can be read to you. http://www.starfall.com/n/fiction-nonfi ... play.htm?f (and yes, this is the correct link, although the url looks strange!)

Books
Books we used:
Info books:
Penguins by Gallimard Jeunesse
Penguin Chick by Betty Tatham (details emperor penguins lives)
March of The Penguins DVD (some chicks are shown dying, so some children may be sensitive to that)
Fiction:
Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester (really funny!)
Mr. Popper's Penguins (my 5yo loved it, although it's a chapter book - 20 chapters, so we read 2-3 a day including the weekend)

The Tennessee Aquarium has opened a new penguin exhibit and has a neat section on their website. It has a live web cam, penguin crafts and activities, penguin facts and links, and a penguin keeper diary/blog.

(this was with my autism kid, but the craft could be done with any kid)
I just didn't plan ahead for this unit and had to improvise for day 2 craft.
We had an empty roll of toilet paper.
Took black construction paper for the back side.
left the tummy side white (but if your rolls is brown, then cover it in white)
I had dd draw eyes on it
Poked a hole for the beak and used the yellow rod from the Cuisenaire rods for the beak
poked 2 holes for Flippers and used 2 more Cuisenaire rods for that
and then set the whole thing on top of the Orange rods. Well, it was supposed to be the feet. It looks more like the penguin is on a set of skis.
Very simple, quick and we had fun with it.
Also, played with stuffed penguins today too :-)
It's all about fun!!!!!

Do you need a quick information sheet on Penguins (especially emperor penguins since the TM mentions them.)

Re: #16 - Penguin
We were amazed to learn that Emperor penguins can be 4 feet tall and 100 lbs! So, I drew a life size Emperor penguin on several pieces of paper taped together and taped it to the wall. My ds had fun coloring in all the black parts. Then we added a line on the side and marked every inch and foot with numbers and marked how tall each child was. The penguin is taller! We can't bear to take down our huge penguin on the wall because he's like a part of our hallway now, lol.
Re: #16 - Penguin snack
My son found a recipe in his junior cook book that he wanted to try and it corresponded well to the Penguin unit.
Make a cup of hot cocoa- not boiling hot, just hot enough to be tasty safe for kids.
Add an iceberg (a scoop of vanilla ice cream).
Cover it with snow (whipped topping from a can).
Sprinkle with penguins (chocolate candy sprinkles).
Enjoy!
