I think I am going to have the wall map laminated, if possible. Office Max can laminate up to 24" wide.Kim Schroter wrote:Those of you who used ECC... What would you advise laminating for this year?

I would laminate your wall map. I happened to already have the same exact wall map already purchased and it is already laminated. I got it at Sam's Club about 2 years ago. It cost about $9-10.

I had a set of laminated maps from Geography Matters.
I hung the map we were currently working with on the wall using binder clips and push pins. Whenever we learned the location of a country, my kids took turns outlining the countries with Vis-a-Vis markers and added the flag to their passports. We played the game with the big maps and it worked just fine! After we finished the year I just wiped off all the marks we had made on the maps so they are ready for another year.

I checked with Kinkos and it is $36 to laminate the wall map!
I called Office Max and they could laminate my wall map for ECC and it was free since it was a free teacher Thursday. I dropped it off yesterday and I am picking it up today.
They also had the same map already laminated for around $12.

Re: Wall Map
I looked into having it laminated at the local Office Max,but it was too big for their machine.LynnH wrote:Did anybody laminate the world wall map or have it "preserved" in another way?
Thanks,

I laminated it myself using the sticky laminate. I had to use several pieces, and it was tricky because it was so large. The job is far from perfect, but I am glad I did it. I don't have to worry about it ripping. Also, we have written on it at times with a dry erase marker and it wipes right off. This was especially helpful to my daughter when we were working on latitude and longitude.

Re: Wall Map
I hAd mine laminated at a printer store. It didn't cost a lot and it really has kept it looking nice. I had to call around and find a place with a large enough laminating machine but I found one. And I am very pleased.
I highly recommend looking into it.

If you have a teaching store in your town or near you they usually have a big enough one to laminate with. That's what I am having done.

Re: Wall Map

I have a very large roll of plastic to cover my windows in the winter, and I use it all the time for laminate or a clear plastic tablecloth. I had to adjust the map and replace the plastic cover quite a few times during the year, but it was worth it to have our Father's world right there on our school table. The only thing I added to our map was the Bosphorus Channel.
Re: Wall Map
We have our US Map on our kitchen/school table and it is covered with a clear plasctic shower curtain .
P.S. If I want anything to stay nice (with 6 DC constantly touching, reading, looking), we have to "laminate" it in some way. We use contact paper mostly, but I second the UPS store, they're always the cheapest.

Our teacher's resource room for the public schools allow us to us their equipment. Laminating is .50 a foot and it is about 3 feet wide. it is by far the cheapest way to go in this area.

How big is the wall map that comes with ECC?
50" by 32", as the USA map from EXP1850 is the same size and I had to know the size of the USA map to get it laminated...rtlmom wrote:Silly question, but I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to put it. Thanks!
I went to FedEx Office - it was $32 or so...Cyndi (AZ) wrote:Yep - I just measured mine because I'm a dork like that.50" X 32"
I'm wondering where Trish went to get something that big laminated? . . .

Re: How big is the wall map that comes with ECC?
Thanks!
You know, I think I like the idea of putting it on the kitchen table where we school, and then putting a heavy, clear tablecloth over it. Then I don't have to move it around or find the wall space (we live in a small house).
The tri-fold board idea was neat, too, but there I have to find a place for it. Hmmm...ideas.

World wall map dilemma - Where to place it?
I too have a teeny tiny home and no wall space to speak of. Know how you feel.cvcraven wrote:I ordered my supplies for countries and cultures and they arrived today. (Yay!!!!)
I pulled out the wall map I ordered through MFW and it is WAY too big for the space I have.
Anyone have suggestions on what I can do? Will it be ok to use a different (smaller) map than the one that comes w/ the curriculum? I have a teeny tiny home and no place to hang this one that will be convenient for us to use.
Thanks!
Do you have a table? I saw where someone with space dilemmas put the map on the table, then covered it with a clear piece of plastic to protect it. Of course even if you do have a table big enough you may not like to have a map on it all the time.

Re: World wall map dilemma
Hmmmm let me go check to see if my table if big enough. LoL
Nope, table too small as well. Thanks for the suggestion though. Told my DH it was a clear signal that I needed new kitchen furniture but he didn't think it was funny.
I think I'm going to have to attach it over some other things. I'll probably play around with it some tomorrow and see what works. I do wish it was about 4 inches smaller.

Re: World wall map dilemma
can you trim it on the sides a little and not lose too much, or fold it back a little.....
or place on one of those cardboard trifold things and shove it under a sofa or bed or place behind a table near a wall? then bring it out for school.
do any of the bathroom walls work?
even if you have to have "western hemisphere" on one wall, prime meridian in the corner and east on adjoining wall? it's ok if it goes around a corner in some room, right?

Re: World wall map dilemma
We never hung ours up. We unfolded it at times, and used the placemat size lots of other times.
However, I have hung up large maps and posters on the wall right over things, whether over a cabinet or picture or door. I think of it as interesting and fun.

Re: World wall map dilemma
I went out and bought a roller shade ( the size big enough happened to be in clarance at my local store
I paid $5) this weekend I'm going to try to attach the map to it. I'm thinking spray adhesive. If it works I can just roll my map up out of the way... Will come back and let you know how it goes.

I have an attached garage with walls that I don't use.... or garage door panels could work...
window shade.. hmmm...... how about any windows large enough... or again.. if windows are narrow... but close.. half on one, half on other?
I know it ends up taking away from pretty decorations and such.... but I never have those anyway.
