I had a similar experience about 2 years ago as I was also having an insecure moment about homeschooling and curriculum. I was walking in a little town near us with great sidewalks and lovely churches (Salem,VA) and praying about these things...seeking His perfect wisdom...when all of a sudden the First United Methodist Church Bell began playing (as it does everyday at noon) "My Father's World"!! I laughed and laughed and sent up praises...some folks think I'm crazy but for me that was definitely a "God is so good" moment!

I just had to share two funny things that happened yesterday.

We started CTG on Monday and yesterday afternoon my husband took my dd7 to her yearly eye doctor visit. My husband came home telling me about how she explained to the doctor all about the blind spot in her eye. This was from day three in Science. The doctor and my daughter even did the experiment from Genesis For Kids with the dimes and covering one eye. I couldn't believe she had an intelligent conversation with a Phd about something she learned this week!

Then last night my in-laws came over for dinner and during the meal my ds3 asked my dd10 if she had seen one of his books. She replied, "No I have not, and if you were not such a biblioklept we would have an easier time keeping up with your books." We all got a good laugh out of that and my in-laws were very impressed with her vocabulary!

So just four days in and we are definitely learning lots of wonderful things!

Now I'm off to prepare for our Sabbath feast...

We're using ECC and our increased awareness of geography has been fantastic. In a major dept store last week, going down the escalator, my son noticed a sign that said "ELEVATOR LOCATED IN CHINA" "That's a long way to go for an elevator," he said, not realizing china meant fancy dishes!

Last week our family visited Jamestown. As we were riding across the ferry, I asked my boys if any of them remembered the 3 ships the colonists used to sail to Jamestown. We had covered this topic a few weeks ago in MFWEXP1850. My ds8 remembered Columbus' ships. Then my ds 6 spoke up. He said they were the Pocahontas, the Williamsburg, and the Surry. These were the 3 ferry ships that could take us to Jamestown. We had a good laugh over the matter before enjoying the day at Jamestown.

LOL, that's funny. My 7yod saw a picture of 3 ships in one book we were reading about Jamestown, and I think it was mentioned in the text, too. She cried out, "The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria!"

Okay, so we're reading from the First grade Bible reader "A Wife for Isaac." and my son reads, "Lord, please help me find the right grill."

Of course, this results in lots of laughter, and I say, "That's what you say before you go shopping at Home Depot."

So, the next line in the book is, "A pretty girl came to the well." And I can't help but think, "A pretty grill came to the well." Well, that brought more rounds of laughter.

Sigh. That was fun.

Now, back to work.

We're on Day 1 of penguins.

In one of the informational books on penguins, it talked about how a single male might try to steal another penguin's mate and showed a picture of the two guys in battle posture. We got a 10th stick for the hundreds chart today, so as we were bundling them up I thought we'd reinforce the lesson on the 10 commandments from church last night. We read one of the commandments for every stick. When we got to the one on adultery, I explained it as not taking someone else's husband or wife, and she immediately said, "Like that bad penguin!" Little did I know the connection that would end up being made there!

I got my hands on a copy of an MFW 1st TM. My dd saw it on the kitchen counter and casually asked, "Mom, what's this?" I said, "Oh just something I'm looking at." She looked at it and said, "It says, 'My Father's World First Grade". "

Hm, guess she's ready!

She was grinning the whole time and eagerly bouncing up and down. When I confirmed to her that it was indeed the First Grade teacher's manual, she started asking if we were starting first grade today. I told her we had to wait until we finished K. She sighed and looked very dutiful as she said, "Ok, let's get going!"

So, my box came yesterday and after sitting there like an unwrapped present, the sunlight twinkling off the tape, we FINALLY opened it right before bed. Umm...WOW!

Anyway, our box is here and we are happy.

After a good time of devotions, learning about "God bless America," Going over the Pledge and reading and discussing the Vikings, we were ready to stop. My 2nd daughter said, "But Momma, I didn't do any work.....All I did was listen."

My son has about 2 maybe 3 weeks left of 1st grade. I have Adventures and it is all planned so he can start after 1st is finished. We are going to school year round. Now my problem is we haven't even started Adventures yet and I keep looking at ECC for next year. I know I don't need to look at it that long...

... part of me wants to go ahead and order it so I can look at it. LOL I think I need hide my catalogs for awhile Am I the only one that has this problem??

Heehee, no, you're not the only one

I think for some of us, homeschooling becomes not just our job or our calling but also our hobby We all like to have hobbies to relax us, eh? And it's a harmless one at that, I always say...

I must admit I was that way about books even before I homeschooled. Had long wish lists even though I hadn't finished reading the books I already had on my shelves

It's taking me GREAT resolve to NOT place my order, even at our conference, just so not to be distracted.

After God led us through many changes and we ended up taking a year off from formal curriculum, I learned to plan in pencil . . . but I still look at book lists and plan!
