Weeks 25 & 31: RtR Streams of Civ. observation

We were just reading on page 374 in Streams. This is week 31 in TM of RTR.
Got very confused about the term "Babylonian Captivity of the Church". Went back to page 371 and re-read the bold face paragraph Babylonian Captivity of the Church for it to make sense. I wrongly thought of the other Babylonian capitivty. Oops! :) (I was thinking Hundred Years War, 1300's AD, Babylonian Exile 700 BC -- oh well -- it's Monday morning.)
In the TM, today's reading suggested to stop the paragraph before this paragraph so I did that at first.
May also be a good section to read during Week 25 with the Hundred Years War.
Thought I'd point that out in case I wasn't the only one who got confused.

Re: RTR - Weeks 25 & 26 - making the compass
If you're doing the compass demonstration from Science this week and don't have any cork, use styrofoam. I just found some in box and cut a sliver off of that and we were able to slide our needle into it and everything. Our compass worked! I would think if you had any styrofoam peanuts (or other packaging material like that), they would be even easier than that formed shape we had to cut out.
I know styrofoam has lots of static electricity, so I'm not sure how much that had an impact on the whole thing, but we follow the steps, and every time we dropped the needle in the styrofoam into the lid, it would turn the same direction.

Another idea for the compass activity.
If you did the Adventures year and own the "Fun with Magnets" kit, this would be a good time to pull that back out.
We just floated the crepe rubber disk on the water and placed the small straight magnet on top. Every time we made the north end face south, and let go, it would turn itself around! Pretty fun to watch.
